USB ports acting weird

I have a monitor with USB ports. The USB cable from the monitor to the computer goes to a USB port on the back of the computer.

A month ago, the USB's on the monitor were not working. Plug in a camera, and the camera would show it connected but the box on what to do with it didnt pop up.

I plugged it into the front USB's and it worked correctly.
I plugged the camera into another USB on the back and it work perfectly.

I then changed ports of the monitors USB cable on the back, and it now worked again.

I thought maybe that port was bad.

Now, a month later, the monitor ports are messed up again.

The camera still works off of the front ports tho.

What could cause this, or how to fix this?

But then why would it work when I change the cable to another USB port on the back of the computer? If the hub was burnt out, it wouldn't work on any port. I even put it to the front USB ports, and they worked.

I moved the USB cable from the post in the back to the port it was in last time the monitor usb cables failed to work, and it works now. At some point, it might stop working, then when I change the ports it starts working again.

It seems something is causing them to fail or not work.

It's really pretty simple. The monitor ports are not getting enough power to handle the devices. Unless the monitor ports are powered independently, they draw their power from the PC - and that can get very strained with several USB ports.

Try a powered 4 port hub connected to the monitor port, and then the device into it.

Oh i thought that you plugged the device into the other USB ports on the system not the monitor hub. But like corkyg said it may be that the hub in the monitor uses the system power and the ports are not getting enough power from the system.

That would be my guess as well - inadequate port power. I have a nice, self-powered hub at the second link in my sig. below.
