usb port

my case has front usb 1.1 ports. If a motherboard supports usb 2.0 will it work with these ports or will the hardware limit the connection to 1.1? Is there a physical difference between 1.1 and 2.0 jacks?

If you connect the front ports to a USB 2 pin array on the mobo, then it should work as USB 2.0. No real difference in the physical connectors.

The cables used by the front panel's USB ports may affect the USB ports speed.

If the cables are where you can see the wire colors all the way from the motherboard to the front panel's USB ports, it will most likely revert to USB 1.1 speeds when connected to the motherboard's USB 2.0 headers.

If the cables are where you can only see the wire colors at each end, and the longest middle portion of the cables are in a single colored jacket, then the front panel's USB ports should operate at USB 2.0 speeds when connected to the motherboard's USB 2.0 headers.

I have had several cases that had the all wire colors visible cables, and every one of their front USB ports would only work at USB 1.1 speeds when connected to USB 2.0 headers.

The best answer is that some will and some won't. A lot de[pends on what the above poster was refering to about seeing the wire colors is that typically the USB 2.0 wires are shielded to prevent data corruption. Some times the boards that are mounted on the front panel have electronic components that determine what version they are... It's a crapshoot. Contact the Case mfg they may be able to answer you better and they may ship you a new front panel, free. Antec shipped me a new case panel to make mine USB 2.

as other have said, some will and some won't. my dad baught a USB hub before usb 2. when 2 came out, the hub didn't work as a 2. it depends whether it's shielded.
