i notice in my device manager that i have a "standard enhanced pci to usb host controller" as well as 2 "standard OpenHCD usb host controller"s
the former has 6 ports - usb 2.0
the latter have 3 ports each usb 1.1

all i knew was that my board supported 6 usb 2 ports
in the back of my pc i have 4 usb ports [ie slots to plug into] which contain 1 usb2 scanner [recognised on the enhanced controller], a printer and a dsl modem [both recognised on the openhcd controller] as well as 2 ports in the front.

what does all the different type of controllers mean and what do i need to do to make all 6 "slots" usb2.0 given that the m/b is supposed to support this?

i'm sorry it is a slightly wierd question but i am confused by this arrangement in device manager

[*]standard enhanced = USB 2.0
[*]you cannot make a 1.1 card/controller USB 2.0
[*]Why are you connecting your DSL modem thru a USB port?

because it is a usb modem.

okay i cant make a 1.1 controller a usb2.0 but then i have 4 "slots" in the back of my motherboard; my standard enhanced cotroller supports 6 ports yet only seems to be "recognising" 1 device, whereas the 2 other usb devices are being recognised by the usb1.1 controller - how do i get the usb controller to recognise the and run the devices in the other 2 slots [and any devices in the front usb ports which are also supposed to be usb2]?

if it helps, i noticed that:
the scanner [usb 2] only works when plugged into 1 of the slots and is not recognised when plugged into the others.
infact it seems that my 2 front ports work as usb 1.1 - 1 is mapped to the same root hub as the hub that "controls" the modem and printer on 2 of the back ports
the other front port maps to the 2nd 1.1 root hub
of the 4 back slots 2 map to the hub as above and the scanner/usb2.0 slot maps to the usb2.0hub [with 5 empty "ports" on this hub].
the 4th slot, when i put anything in it comes up as "unknown usb device"

The only thing I can think of is that you might want to update your bios.
Or just dont use the two front usb ports, do you really need more then four ports?

not really but they are useful for things that are hotswapped alot eg my webcam

i think i agree that at the very least i will have to disable the front ones and see what that does.
it still wouldnt fix all though as 2 of the back 4 are being controlled by a 1.1 controller
