usb pci drives

just a quick question. do you guys think it matters speedwise which usb 2.0 pci drive i purchase? should i bother paying 30+$ for a brand name or can i just order a 7$ drive off newegg with no problems?

damn, i just bought a cheap usb 2.0 firewire combo drive and the controller doesn't seem to be working. i plugged in my flash drive and the computer doesn't even recognize it. any help is greatly appreciated.

bump.. anyone? i have spent the last 5 hours trying to figure this out to no avail. when i open up the device manager, the controller is there but with a yellow exclamation and an error reading "the device cannot be opened."

by the way, i'm running windows xp pro. please help, i think i am losing my mind

NEC's latest chipset is the best IMO...what drive are you using (link/) as XP should pick it up

thanks for reply.. i'm using this card, but after doing some research it looks like a pos as quite a few people have been having problems with it.. http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-2PCI1394.html/

i got the drive to install, but it still doesn't seem to be working. all the drivers are installed in the device manager, but none of the usb drives work. when i plug in my cruzer micro, xp recognizes an "unknown device" and it doesn't function as a separate drive like it should. any insight is appreciated
