USB or PS2

Am buying a new mouse. Is a PS2 better or USB?

Most everything is going to be USB.

USB mice have the sample rate locked at 125 samples/second, while the sample rate on PS2 mice can be adjusted up to 200 samples per second.

Personally, I can't tell a difference between a PS2 mouse running at 200 SPP and a USB mouse running at 125 SPP. Therefore, I'd say get whichever one you want.

I prefer USB

It keeps the cables closer to the bottom of my case.

Myth.

PS2 has an adjustable sample rate because the ancient keyboard/mouse controller produces ridiculously high system bus load when overused. The user must choose between smooth mouse and good system I/O performance.

On USB, which is a bus mastering, chipset internal, faster-than-PCI device, the mouse can produce any amount of data, using the best of its abilities, without disturbing anything. That's why there's no adjustments here - they're not needed.

why ? .Keep 1 USB port free for other use , plus some OS may have problem with USB .

This is 2004. Boards have six or eight USB ports, and the major operating systems handle USB mice just fine.

I figure that I could keep 1 USB free if I buy a PS2 mouse and as its for my desktop no need for hot swappability [unlike the USB optical I use in my laptop]. If there is no MAJOR disadvantage with PS2 I will probably buy the PS2.

Thanks all for suggestions. Here is what I did.

Fancy mice were too expensive in India and mostly unavailable. I bought a PS2 and it works fine on shiny reflective desktop. My USB laptop mouse [same Logitech make but USB] does not work at all on the same surface and I need to use a pad. Go figure!!
