Thinking about getting a cdrw. USB or IDE model?
Here's the deal.

USB -- convient connection. I can use on my desktop and notebook.

IDE -- I assume this is faster than the USB model.

I'm looking @ a 4x4x6 model cuz i'm on a budget. I am leaning towards the USB
model becuz I've had trouble connecting an IDE device to my PC. I know it's a setting
with my bios, but I rather not mess with it at the moment since I currently have
things running the way I want it to.

But, if the USB model is going to be much slower (4x4x6 not that fast now) than the
IDE model, then maybe I should look @ the IDE and try to configure my system once
again. If there isn't much difference, I'll just purchase the USB model and have
the luxury of having it connect to my notebook.

thanks,
sam

You will be fine with USB if it is just for casual use and nothing serious. USB burners are going to be slower, and more costly than an internal IDE. But, the convenience of using it with both machines is a plus. If it were me, I'd get an IDE internal and network the machines together so I could dump stuff from the laptop to the desktop that I needed to put on CD.

I thought about purchasing an IDE just to see if it was my old cdrw that was causing the problem, cuz i recently added a HD to the same IDE connector, and everything was fine. So, i'll stop by the local best buy and get one...i'll bring it back if it doesnt work.

however, USB would be nice if i had to bring my laptop on the road or something. might need something from school.

i do have my pcs network, but it's always nice to bring a burner along to work or school ;-)

Well, i was reading around and someone said something about bottleneck with the USB model. I wouldnt be able to do anything else but burn. which isnt bad, cuz i wouldnt be burning a cd everyday. Just for music and backups.
