USB Optical mouse dying?

A friend of mine was having troubles with his PC. I told him to bring it over so I could give it a look; surely enough, the thing was infested with trojans and spyware, to the point where explorer.exe would crash every 2 minutes. He didn't even have SP1, let alone SP2 to boot. Trying to install SP2 would result in a BSOD, even after removing (most of) the spyware.

Anyway, I noticed my mouse (a cheapo USB optical mouse) wasn't working too well in his PC; it would suddenly just stop functioning. I thought it might have something to do with the lack of Service Packs and outdated drivers. I proceeded to do a clean install of a slipstreamed version of WinXP SP2, which went well. However, all of a sudden, the mouse died. Windows wouldn't even recognize it.

I suspected his USB ports might be at fault, being probably USB 1.0. I tried the mouse in my own rig, where it has always been and...it didn't work either!! After trying in all my ports, including the front ones, it finally 'woke up' again. I re-tried in all the ports again to see if they weren't to blame, and now they all work fine.

So the question is, is my mouse dying and should I get a new one? I'm thinking likely yes, but I want some feedback before rushing to the store to buy a new one. It's working fine as I type this.

Thanks

Mine seems to work fine on my rig...until I plug it to my friend's PC. It doesn't work on it, and then it takes a while (several tries) for it to work in my rig again. And it goes on and off intermitently then.

I guess I'll be buying a new one tomorrow. Oh, well. I'll never had a wireless mouse before, might as well pick one of them Logitech up :D

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

That was so funny that I forgot to laugh.

Heres my thoughts: your mouse screwed up once, but give it another chance. I'd wait for it to screw up two or three times more before declairing it dead.

I had a problem kind of like that and it turned out that the wires right where the cable goes into the mouse had been bent and unbent enough time that they were breaking. I took it apart, made a few neat incisions to excise the bad cable, then reconnected everything and now it works fine.
