USB optical drive...any differences, or anything to know?

Are there any difference, as far as ripping and burning programs are concerned, with an external drive in a USB enclosure, compared to an internal drive? If so, what kind of differences?
Also, do various external enclosures use different chipsets for the device to connect through USB, and if so, are any enclosures better than other for this reason?

If it helps any, I'm getting a DVD writer of some kind, and use of EAC is of paramount importance.
