Installed a usb card in mother-in-law's computer. It shows up and says it's functioning (no red x's or yellow ! marks), but doesn't see anything I attach in either slot (thumb drive, printer, mouse). What do I try now? Thanks for any help. I am several states away from home and my own computers so I can't put it into another computer or anything like that. Using Win 98SE Pentium II (yikes) 300mhz.

Try removing it from device manager. Shut down and put it into a different pci slot.

Get drivers if needed. Technically you shouldn't need them, but some companies require them and don't include them with the card.

The mouse would be the best indicator for it working. As long as you have human interface devices listed in the device manager.

If its a via usb card I would recommend taking it back and getting a different brand.

May Help ???

Your (sorry) old motherboard may require the USB be set in the BIOS.

I just installed a USB 2.0 card in my wife's old PII comp.

Dug is right about needing drivers. My new card did absolutely need drivers and came with a CD.

If you didn't get a driver disk, go to the maker's website.

Another thing that you might try doing is go into the BIOS and disable the USB that may have come installed on the mobo. That may eliminate any conflict.
This add-on USB card will have nothing to do with USB enabled in BIOS, that is only for legacy devices that came installed on the mobo.

Thanks! Tried it all and eventually got things to work. I think disabling the MOBO USB finally did the trick. I forgot about Win98's need to have drivers available BEFORE you install the hardware in order to get it recognized the first time. Thanks again.
