USB not functiong as it should

I am having an issue with my USB drivers not automatically installing when I plug in my USB devices. I have to go into device manager and click on update driver and then it will find the drivers for that device and I will be able to use that device on the computer. Plug and play is enabled and started on the computer. I am using a windows XP pro build with service pack 2. This problem just started occurring within the last week.

Seems that a similar issue was recently reported. A number of solutions were recommended in that thread. See :

I would try some of the solutions as one of them might just work for you.

Postscript:
This is sounding like some auto downloaded MS update may be causing this for users.
I also would inspect the dates on installed updates to see if there were any just prior to when you noticed the subject problem.
