usb mouse/touchpad question

I hate using the touchpad, and have a usb mouse, and i even take it into the field pretty often so i can avoid using the touchpad. ive never been able to get comfy typing on a lappy keyboard, and often enough drag a thumb over the touchpad

this is annoying.

is there a way i can have the touchpad automatically disabled when i add the usb mouse, and automatically re-enabled when i take the mouse out?

this is using Xubuntu 6.10

Many laptops allow a CMOS entry in BIOS that will disable the touchpad, or auto disable it when a mouse is plugged in.

The HP and Compaq laptops have had a simple switch on the touchpad that turns it off and on. That was one of the main reasons I got an HP dv1000 a couple of years ago. Now I wouldn't be without that switch.
