USB mouse randomly redetected?

I use a Microsoft IntelliEye optical mouse. When I connect it to my usb port it will at randomly redetect the usb device and this forces me to reboot. I am running win2k sp2. I have an Abit motherboard with a classic Athlon 700Mhz.
