USB Mouse not recognized in Win 98...SOLVED!

I'm having a problem with my Intellimouse Explorer in Win 98. Whenever I restart, the BIOS recognizes the mouse, but when Windows starts the light on the mouse goes out and I get the "no mouse installed" message. If I unplug and then reconnect the mouse it works fine, but that gets to be a pain.

Some stuff I've tried:

BIOS (FIC AD11 mobo, version AB242 came installed, it's the most current I can find)
VIA 4in1 (installed 1432v, no effect)
VIA USB filtering
BIOS legacy USB support (on or off, no apparent effect)
MS KnowledgeBase (had a couple articles that didn't seem to apply or didn't help)

It seems to me that the problem is that Windows is not checking the USB ports at the right point in time, but darned if I can find any way to change that behavior...

EDIT:

I found a fix here.

Installed, restarted, works like a charm now.

I had the same problem in Win98 (not SE). Fixed it with an option in the bios. You said you tried that so the only other thing I can suggest is get a newer OS or try to d/l some new software from microsoft.com. Otherwise you could always buy a USB to PS/2 connector.

That's right on my A7V133, there is the option to have auto usb mouse support enabled and disabled as well.

Yeah, the FIC BIOS has an option to enable/disable USB mouse, but it seems to have no effect. I have version 3.1 of the Intellipoint software, which is the most recent as far as I can tell.

I guess I can wait for that Windows XP disk. :)

This is a VIA chipset issue. I have the KT133a chipset with the same exact 4-in-1's as you. My USB mouse worked fine then one day I installed a new PCI card and the exact same thing started happening. Nothing on boot-up but you reconnect it and voila, it works. I did a lot of research on the subject and tried everything I could think of and no success. It seems the recommendation is to either get a PS-2 adapter or an add-on USB controller. Kinda sucks but its a VIA thing.

IF your OS supports USB mouse, you want to disable this in the BIOS. The BIOS feature will translate the USB data and present it to the OS as though it came in on the PS/2 port.

<< Um...ok...i give up. How did you solve it? >>

Check my initial post (the edited part). I found a link to a patch which updates one of the USB driver files to work properly with Via chipsets on fast (>350MHz :) Athlons. Installed the patch, worked like a charm!

Cool. Unfortunately it shows where the majority of MS's testing lies (with Intel products apparently since there wasn't a problem with their chipset).

Leaves us AMD people outside.
