Over the winter I built up a system with the following specs:
Athlon 64 3200+
ASRock 939 Dual SATA mobo
2GB Patriot RAM
Dual PATA drives (not in RAID)
Sapphire X800 PCI-E v-card
Win XP w/SP2
Antec 500W Truepower PS
With this system I was using a Logitech 510 USB gaming mouse, plugged into the PS2 port via an adapter, because all my other USB slots were filled. Everything worked after the initial build - it was a beautiful thing! 🙂
However, on boot-up earlier this week, the mouse pointer wouldn't move - at all. It was still there, but wouldn't move. I tried plugging the mouse into a USB slot, but it just kept making those noises that a USB device was being plugged in, then removed, then plugged in again, etc., on and on. It's not the mouse, as it is immediately recognized and works fine in my other machine, and other USB mice have the same problem in my main rig. I tried installing updated USB drivers from ULI, then the MS default drivers, etc. No dice. Interestingly, old PS2 mice work fine in the machine, as do other USB devices such as my joystick. The only big change I made to the system prior to this was updating my video drivers, but it all worked fine immediately after that, so I'm guessing that's unrelated. Any thoughts/comments/suggestions appreciated!
