I posted this in the OS section but no help there. Hope I have better luck here.

Lately, I have been building a new system and rebuilding an old system. There is an annoying problem I ran into whenever I make a change in the systems and/or fresh install of Win XP Pro.

The USB mouse and KB were frozen and not recognized by Windows. USB legacy was enable in bios so no problem there.

If I can get into Windows after the sign in then drivers can be installed and the reboot will solve the problem.

It's a chicken and egg problem. Since I cannot get into windows I cannot install drivers. By the way the mouse and KB are both Microsoft.

I solved the problem by using PS2 mouse and KB to get into windows, installed the drivers and then reboot problem solved.

But it's really annoying to have to drag out PS2 mouse and KB. I wonder if some of the experts here who build systems days in and days out have any tips for me.

Win XP Pro installed with no problem. It's just when I had to move HDs, DVDs memories etc.. and had to unplug that the problem started.

Win XP does not seem to recognize the Microsoft mouse and KB as generic and drivers must be installed for them to work.

I thought of safe boot (F8) into windows and install the drivers.

Any good idea?

Thats weird, I had no problems when installing XP with both USB keyboard and mouse, they were Logitechs though...interesting

No problem installing XP or the mouse or KB, AFTER I got into Windows. It's the sign in of the PW to Windows that the mouse and KB froze.

And when I unplug the system to do wire managment or other things, then reboot same damn thing happened again.

I got into Windows with the PS2 KB and mouse and I had to reinstall drivers (?) and then everything is beloved patriot dory again until the next time.

It's like a scene of GROUND HOG DAY!!!!

Happens with me sometimes too. Unplug the mouse and keyboard, after XP loads, just plug them back in. XP will recognize that a new USB device has been plugged in, then set itself up in a minute or so.

Annoying, but not as bad as digging out the PS2.

EDIT: doh...password. that won't work for you.
