Read the box.

If it requires Windows, it's a software modem.
This rule works for printers too.

I'm sure it won't be a problem. software modems are not the demons they once were.

What kind of computer do you have that you need a hardware modem? I have a 1 GHz celeron and a $15 soft modem that works just fine.

If he's trying to use it under something other than Windows, it will probably not work.

i have a 950mhz celeron. playing warcraft3, it slows to a crawl when there are LOTS of units on the screen fightning/shooting at each other. i need all the mhz i can get :)

and i got disconnected once in a HEAVY firefight. could that be because the games used up all the MHZ and left the soft modem with none?

Pick up a $15 Lucent winmodem, you'll be much better off than with a USB modem.

BTW, anything that connects via USB is soft.

No. The modem will take all the CPU power it needs. I've never noticed any difference between gaming with hardware modems and gaming with software modems.

Negatory-- its not an issue. Most likely its either your CPU or video card that needs replacing. The difference between a soft modem and a hard modem mattered back when PCs were 100 mhz. It doesnt matter any more. Its like 1-2% of your total CPU power.

I suggest getting more CPU/RAM/Video with your cash.

ahh..thx. found out softmodems take up ~60mhz. since my comp has 512megs ram, it's probably my old radeon 32meg SDR pci video card thats the bottleneck :( and that disconnect was probably coincindental
