US Robotics USR5633A - I want to return this modem to USR. But the tech support rep had it working in Hyperterminal.

The rep insists that since it works in Hyperterminal, I have no grounds for a return. Yet it is not recognized in AOL 9, Roadrunner's dial-up access, or USR's own program 'ControlCenter'.

Is this a valid argument on his part?

Why would it work in Hyperterminal and nowhere else? Could it be a v92 issue?
In Modem Properties, I can query the modem successfully. (At least it shows no errors and says 'success' a couple of times.)

Any help would be appreciated.

He probably is trying to say that if it does HyperTerminal it means that physically the Modem is working and your problem stem from software or Tel line.

However AOL9 who knows what it does to ones computer, since they are using a ?kinky? dialup installation.

Try to uninstall AOL9 and install a Regular DialUp connection and try RR.

JackMDS - Thanks for the reply.

I have removed AOL9.

When I try to 'Create a new connection' thru 'New Connection Wizard', I get to the 'Internet Connection' screen - but the check box for 'Connect using a dial-up modem' is grayed out. It wants to force me to use my lan connection.

This is really wierd. Roadrunner's utility asks me if I want to install a modem. If I click yes, it takes me to Modem Properties. But my modem is there, everything looking ok. If I click ok, Roadrunner still tells me I have no modem installed. Basically the same thing happened with AOL.

Maybe this could be related to XP Services?
Or maybe I need to disable v92? (if possible - anyone know how?)

Thanks.

In WinXP.

Find your Modem in the Control Panel Phones and Modems. Click on the Modem Properties choose the Diagnostics Tab and Query the Modem.

In most cases if the Query is successful it means that the Modem is working and installed correctly.

After installing a Basic DialUp Connection. Go to Control Panel and click on the Network Connection. If the DialUp connection installed you should see there an Icon for it. Double click on the icon and you should get a screen to put the connection Tel. o., ID, PW, etc.

If the Modem Diagnostic is OK and you can not get a DialUp Socket you might want to uninstall the Network part of the OS, and reinstall it manually without Wizards.

That's just it. Query says 'success'. But XP won't let me install a dial-up connection.

I also noticed that I can't dial my ISP access number thru Hyperterminal. I get 'NO CARRIER' message.
But I can dial my cell phone and it rings and if I send the call to voicemail, I can actually hear my voicemail message thru the modem!
Maybe my ISP doesn't support v92?
This still doesn't answer why I can't install a dial-up connection.

I'm a bit leary about removing and reinstalling Network services. It took me a long time to set up my lan network. So I don't want to go thru that again. The dial-up connection is only for emergency backup (in case RR dies). If it comes to that, it's Ebay time for the modem!

Thanks alot for the help.
