USB modem works in Hyperterminal, but nowhere else.

I have a US Robotics v.92 usb modem (USR5633A) - using Windows XP. I can't get it working using AOL 9, Roadrunner's dial-up access, or USR's own program 'ControlCenter'. In AOL 9, it attempts to retrieve the access numbers, but can never connect. The same thing happens in Roadrunner's dial-up. In USR ControlCenter, I open the program and it just hangs, trying to detect modem. I eventually must ctrl-alt-del to logout of program.

I contacted USR and the tech had me test in Hyperterminal. I could connect there, using the ATT number that the tech gave me. Also in Modem Properties, I can query the modem successfully. (At least it shows no errors and says 'success' a couple of times.)

Problem is I have no case to return modem because US Robotics tech had it working in Hyperterminal. Is this a valid argument?

In Device Manager, USB Universal Host Controllers are sharing IRQ's:
IRQ 16 - shared with video card (2 usb controllers here)
IRQ 18 - shared with Ultra ATA Storage Controller and PRO/1000 CT Network Connection (LAN)
IRQ 19 - not shared (USB only)

I thought that if I could find the 2 unshared usb plugs, it might help. But I have tried all 8 usb connections on mobo (Intel D875PBZ) without success. My usb hard drive does work on all 8 plugs. I have the latest modem driver installed and it's plugged directly into the phone jack.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
