USB Mice stop working intermittently

This problem exists on all the machines in a lab at work (all same model/image).

Apparently randomly, the USB mice will shut off (no light or anything). Simply unplugging them and plugging them back in fixes it.

We've tried shutting off the power management on the USB controllers in device manager, but that made no change.

Any ideas what else I should check?

Dell Optiplex GX270's running XP Pro.

Had a similar problem with HP/Compaq mice a couple years ago. USB mouse would just quit and the only way to get it working again was to unplug and plug back in. Compaq posted a fix on their site. May want to see if the same is true for Dell.

Don't see any software updates available. There were a couple BIOS revision since ours though, so we put the latest on. Didn't mention anything specific about this issue in it, but I don't see any way to see the errata for older BIOS' on Dell's site, only the current one, so it could have been something in one of the previous updates.

Just applied it on Friday afternoon, we'll see how it goes on Monday.

you can always call dell if it still occurs on the pc you tried updating the bios on, but i think that model may no longer be under warranty, maybe one is or has the extended warranty if the problem keeps happening? state the problem to dell, # pc have this same problem, usb mice shut off, tried different usb mice manufacturers.. let dell do the work. 😀 they can only issue a fix on your circumstances, probably a config problem.
