USB keyboard works in BIOS, not in Ubuntu

Having trouble with keyboards with Ubuntu 11.10. Two different keyboards won't work with a computer with Ubuntu. Tried different USB ports, when it boots up lights on Num lock and Caps lock work. When I go into the BIOS, the keyboard works. When the splash screen comes up, keyboard stops working. No Num Lock, no Cap Lock. Can't enter anything into the password box.

Any ideas?

If both are usb keyboards, find a keyboard with a different connector to try. Another thing to consider is reinstalling. How did you manage to complete the installation without a keyboard?

Splash screen? Whose splash? Bootmanager or X? If it is only the X, where keyboards don't work, then you could go to runlevel 3 to read logs and change X configuration.

Can you boot a live/rescue?

Hmm... Was able to login with the virtual keyboard. Per a thread on the Ubuntu forums, we toggled to console mode, then back to normal mode, and the keyboard started working.

Anyone have any idea why this would happen? Or a permanent fix (other than reinstall the OS)?
