K so here's the deal, i'm not sure what exactly happened cuz I was at work at the time, but when I get off work, I find my USB mouse isn't working. My roomate said the internet wasn't working (comcast, duh) and so she turned the power strip off, then back on. When the computer reset, neither the mouse or USB HDD are being recognized by windows, but the USB keyboard somehow works just fine... I've tried a few different mice? in different USB ports, and it's just not working. It boots just fine, lights on the mouse are on so i know it's getting power, but as soon as the windows splash screen comes on, it is disabled. I've completely reset my BIOS just to see if someone was messing with the USB settings in there, and still no go. The only other thing I could think of is a virus or the USB drivers somehow got screwed up, but it was working perfectly fine right before I left for work... Any suggestions?

It's possible the USB ports are shorting out. It happens but it's rare. If it is true, a motherboard replacement would probably be a good idea, because it'll cook your PSU and your other components if you just keep the PC running and let the problem spread.

But that's a worst case scenario.

It was the USB ports gone bad :(... I've tried everything from reinstalling the usb drivers, to switching out every usb component I had... I just got done re-installing XP as a last resort, and they're still dead :(... Oh well, I guess that's what you get with cheap mobo's. Thanx mucho.

Go into BIOS and disable the onboard USB ports. Then just add a PCI card with USB and Firewire ports and continue to march.
