USB Jump/Thumb Drive formatting

Got a Kingston 4Gb jump/thumb drive that has no read/write lock protection tab. Well, the drive has become useless and needs to be reformatted.

Problem, the USB drive will not format as Windows says it's write protected.

Any idea what to do? 4Gb is better than my 128Mb jump/thumb drive.

That is odd, did you try booting into safe mode and format it from there ?

Tried safe-mode without networking. It did not format. It gets to 49% and quits.

WOW, there are a few good things in that thread.

I do have a USB floppy drive. If I can boot from it, maybe the Win98SE boot disk will work. If not, others posted in that thread of other utilities to try out.

I have saved every OS boot disk since win95. It's one way to boot in and remove virus control of computers too.

I had a similar problem with an 8GB flash drive. It would not format by right clicking on it and format in Windows Explorer, but I could format it in Computer Management by right clicking on it and selecting format. Just make sure you assign it a drive letter.

Download HXD
http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

Run it as admin and go to extras, open disk
Select the physical disk
That is the raw data on the drive.
Fill any data in the first couple sectors with 00 and then remove the drive.
windows should be able to format it now.

Windows 7: Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - expand Storage - Disk Management

Yup nice one MadScientist that is the other way of formatting a more proper way you know whats going on. Hope Disk management does it for you. Let us know.
