I realize I am a newbie. This is what I've encountered. I upgraded from 98SE to ME (a "friend" thought he was doing me a favor). My USB/PS/2 compatibile Intellimouse Explorer which worked on 98SE with the USB plugged into a PS/2 converter, would not work on ME (USB or otherwise), even with the downloaded drivers from the proper web site. A few days ago, I upgraded to XP Pro. Everything works except that I have the same mouse problem. I have two USB outlets. My USB Keyboard (Microsoft Internet Keyboard) works fine in one. The other port seems not to work at all. XP Pro will not recognize new hardware.

I have an old Intel 1.0 gig motherboard (900 something Mhz).
512 Ram.

I have an old NEC PS/2 mouse plugged into the proper slot and it works.

I've been told to uninstall the USB ports and XP will reinstall them. What if I have the same problem with it not seeing what I did? I told you I was new.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

does your keyboard work for bios control and stuff (when booting, press x to enter setup)?
if they work then, then its a problem with XP, if not, its a bios/cmos setitng problem
if your motherboard has a boot from keyboard jumper, set this so you cant boot using the keyboard
also, dont always depend on XP drivers...if it came with a disc, install it

My thanks to everyone. I'll try the clean install tomorrow and see what happens. The IT at the school where I work that will help me reformat and install. I figured it might have been just a USB port was bad or something.

My "upgrade" seems to have gone well except for this pesky mouse problem. Hopefully, it will all work with the clean install. I did call Microsoft "pre-sales" before I purchased and they explained how to do a clean install with the academic upgrade version of XP Pro.

I'm upgrading to a new computer this summer anyway. I've already been assured by Microsoft that I won't have any "activation" problems.

Again, my thanks to all.
