usb in xp not working anymore

i got a compact flash usb adapter, and it worked great! when i installed it, xp immediately recognized it and installed its legacy drivers for its removeable drive. but now, when i plug it in, nothing happens! the light on the usb adapter shows up, but nothing is recognized in device manager (its like nothing's been plugged in). i went to the manufacturer's site to see if there were any new drivers, but it says it has native support to xp. ive plugged it in to both usb ports, same thing happens. i know the ports still work, because i can interchangeably stick in my usb optical mouse. help!
