USB Human Interface Device - How do I connect my serial device to this?

I'm running Windows 2000 SP4. I have 3 serial devices, 2 serial ports on my mainboard. I was at a computer show today and spied a "USB to RS232 (9-Pin) Cable," "High Speed." Great. I bought it and have spent 1/2 the day trying to get it working.

Here's what it says on the package:

For Windows 2000/ Windows 98/ Windows XP

No Driver Needed

To connect a serial device with a 9-Pin RS232 interface to a computer with USB interface.

Easy to install.

That's it! Well, I haven't been able to get it working for any of my three serial devices (an external modem -Aopen 56FMEXV, cable for my MX-700 universal remote for programming on the PC, IR receiver for TV card). I tried on another Windows 2000 machine and I tried in my Windows 98 SE OS (I multiboot). Can't get a serial device recognized in any system when plugged into this thing.

Getting back to my main system (Baby Rigzilla in my sig), in Device Manager I see Human Interface Devices, and under that I see:

HID-compliant Device
USB Human Interface Device

Both are working properly. However, none of the devices are detected.

Doing Google searches, I found a few drivers, and one in particular looked great, assuming that all these USB ---> serial cables are the same. However, after installing the driver, which creates a device called Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port under Ports (COM & LPT), the device is marked with a ! and the properties say that it couldn't be started. When installing the driver, Windows informed me that there was no default configuration and it made me choose an IRQ. There was a default range, and I guess I could have changed that, but instead I tried each possible IRQ, rebooting each time and every time it still wasn't working and couldn't start. Maybe I should just assume that the package was right and I don't need a driver with this thing, but I have no idea how I can get it working. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

The easy solution might be to just add a pci i/o card with serial ports. These should work with no problems.

Problem is I'm running real short of PCI slots too. I called the company that sold the device to me and was told that they sell a docking station that can be used for one each of several ports including serial. $25. He says I can exchange it for that (if I fork over another $10). Well, I might do that. Their return policy stipulates a 15% restocking fee if I want my money back, though, so if the docking station idea doesn't work, well, I lose a few bucks. Too bad I have three COM devices. Don't understand why they don't design everything for USB nowadays. Seems like you can have endless USB devices.

I think as a com port they are useless
Whoa! That's EXACTLY the one I have. Been trying everything to get it to work and so far no luck. Found maybe 1/2 dozen USB-->Serial drivers Googling, but so far no go. The show is in two days. If I can't get it working by then, I'm returning it or exchanging it for a docking station (unless they have a better idea). If anyone knows how I might get this working, please respond. Thanks.

Edit: Ooo... I paid $15, and Computer Geeks is selling it for $8. Boy, I was hosed.
