USB hub setting write-protect flag?

I've had a little NSLU2 setup running debian for a while now. OS is installed on one external drive, the other external drive provides bulk storage for fileserver use. I recently felt the need to add some more disks to the setup, so I purchased a cheap USB hub.

When the storage drive is directly connected to the NSLU2, everything works fine. If it is connected through the hub, the system reports that the drive's write-protect flag is on. The drive itself, as with virtually all USB external drives, has no visible write protect setting or switch. This only seems to happen when it is connected through the hub. Other than this issue, the hub seems to function normally, even when loaded with several devices.

Has anybody ever run into something similar or otherwise gained insight into such a problem?
