usb hub reliability?

I want to move my tower away from my desk and use a USB hub or hubs for all my USB devices. I remember, however, from past experience that hubs do not always work the way you want them to. Some devices work intermittently , drop off the hub, come back on, and other devices just don't work properly unless connected directly to the computer. Do hubs exist that are reliable enough to make it equivalent to plugging a USB device into the back of your computer? Thanks in advance.

I haven't had any problems at all using USB hubs. What devices have you had problems with?

Use self-powered hubs (that have their own wall-warts for power) and you shouldn't have a problem with almost any device. Only a very few require a direct connection to the root - and that is usually because they provide a USB hub function themselves, e.g. some keyboards.

The hub I used eventually failed on me completely, so then it's safe to assume these problems I was having were particular to that hub.

I've used D-Link USB 2.0 and 1.1 powered hubs and never have had a problem.
I only plug USB devices into powered hubs and only powered hubs into the motherboard I/O ports.
I don't plug a device into a hub until that hub has been found and listed in Device Manager.
