USB Hub question: are there any powered by USB only?

I'm hoping to find a USB hub that doesn't require an AC adapter (the big black block that plugs into the wall.) I need more USB ports but I need another item to plug into the wall like I need a hole in the head. Any ideas?

If you can find one of the old ADS Tech. USB hubs (not the new "Ultra Hubs" they make), you can use them without an AC adapter. However, you won't be able to use many USB peripherals.

The Belkin version that was selling "for free" awhile ago at CompUSA and Circuit City has a little switch that allows you to either get its power from the USB port or by using the AC adapter.

Right on about the Belkin.

The model I have is the standard little black/clear 4 port hub. You can use the power if you wish. I need to because I run my scanner through it which needs more than the 100mA of power each port would provide without the AC adapter. B ut things such as cameras, printers, mice, and other items that don't really get their power from the USB port would be fine.

bus powered hubs suck.

you cannot use high drain devices on these. some devices will not work on a bus powered hub.

a self powered hub would provide 500mA on for each port.
