my system has 4 usb ports - 2 behind, 2 in front. i bought a 4-port usb hub because i was running out of ports to use. this hub is connected to a usb port behind.
sometimes, i will have an usb-powered external hdd plugged into a front usb port, and this causes the usb hub to stop functioning. it is still listed in device manager, but it indicates no devices are attached to the hub.
i tried unplugging all devices from the hub, and then plugging the usb hdd to the front port, and it's still the same.
i have also tried supplying the hub with its own power, thinking that the hub might need its own power. that doesn't help as well.
what is going on? how do i resolve it?
