USB headers dead?

Wasn't sure where to post this, so mods, feel free to move if need be.

Apparently, the two USB 2.0 headers on my Asrock 890FX Deluxe 5 mobo are dead. I noticed wonky behavior from them a couple of weeks ago (Windows kept spontaneously making the "connect/disconnect" sound it does when you add or remove a USB device, with only my wireless mouse receiver plugged in), and now they don't respond at all. I got a set of new front panel ports for my Antec case in hopes that these were the problem, but alas, no joy. They sent two sets, and neither respond when plugged into the headers. Oddly enough, all the USB 3.0 ports (front and rear) work perfectly. I have sent Asrock tech support the relevant info, but have yet to hear back. I've also updated the chipset drivers, and all looks good in Device Manager. Not sure what else to try; this seems like a hardware failure. I really need these front ports for a variety of devices, and would rather not have to replace this board. Any suggestions are most welcome.

NOTE: Fairly certain it's not the OS, as I dropped in a drive with the Win8 Preview, and got the exact same result (DM shows all is good, not response from ports).

A strange one, to be sure. I've encountered this behaviour on one of my machines as well, on just one of the headers (!) although it's strange that the malfunction remains so localized and does not affect the rest of the system.

Yeah, kind of makes me wonder if it's an electrical issue, perhaps a circuit failure on the board? Will be curious to see what Asrock has to say. In the meantime, I'm looking at the Microcenter bundles with the new AMD processors.

I just had this happen to a workstation at work. A brand new one to boot.

Hmmm, not encouraging. I've had good luck with Asrock boards so far, but if they end up not replacing it under warranty, then I'm not sure where I' go next. Perhaps Asus?

Happened to me on a gigabyte a few years ago. Usb went first, then the network adapter would randomly not be recognized on boot shortly after. Finally the sata controller went out. Each of them were within a day of the others when they finally died, but the usb behaved similarly to yours with the disconnect reconnect behavior before it finally died.

Well, I'm hoping Asrock will make good on it, but I'm also shopping around just in case. Sigh...
