USB Header/Cable?

I recently bought a USB 8in1 Card reader to quickly transfer files to and from my camera and other accessories. Unfortunately, it ionly seems to have connections to the USB header on the motherboard, and I primarily only need it for use on the road with my laptop. Is there any way I can solder the connections/cable onto a standard USB cable and plug it into the usb port on my laptop? Will that work?
