USB HD won't stay connected

I have an external UDB HD in an enclosure, and when I plug it in the HD light comes on for about 2 secs and then goes out

The drive is not recognized

Is there a way to fix this?

this is on a laptop

Probably this. May also be the cable. I have a Vantec enclosure & the drive always disconnects in a USB 3 port. Different cable & it's fine.

edit*LTC8K6 is right. Some USB ports don't provide as much power as others on some laptops. Try a different port & cable.
