USB HD randomly disconnects (MBP)

I have a 500gb HD in a generic external enclosure, connected to my 13" MBP directly via USB.

I'll get at least one of these messages per day, sometimes even more. Usually have to turn off the case and back on for the HD to be re-recognized.

Is this normal? Is it my enclosure that sucks, or something else?

PS. I use the HD both as my Time Machine and a spare partition for storage/downloads etc.

My iPod disconnects & reconnects when the computer runs hot, e.g. long video transcoding in clamshell mode. However, firewire devices do not exhibit the same problem. I have two FW drives, daisychained. Late 2006 mbp.

It could be the enclosure, there are cheap ones and there are inexpensive ones, the question is figuring out which is which.

Is it an externally powered Hard Drive or a USB-powered only hard drive?

On my MBP, I have one USB port that can not power an external HD and one that can. Have you tried both USB ports?

the freeagent will have its own shutdown timer - you must disable this or it will cause great chaos and pain.

It's got an AC adapter attached to it, so it's externally powered. (should be, anyway...)

I've tried both USB ports and it still happens randomly on both ports. Maybe my enclosure just sucks?

It's a "generic" brand. How can I tell if it has its own shutdown timer?
