USB Hard Drive troubles

i cant get it to show up under windows xp.

i plug it in and it recognizes a usb device has been plugged in but automatically says it has "malfunctioned" when i look at the usb devices it says "unknown device" for which there is no driver installed.
any ideas?

keep in mind that this is an old lacie external drive taken apart with a new hard drive actually placed inside of it. my first instinct was that i had done something wrong but it seems to show up just fine on macs.

any ideas?
