USB Going Bad?

Hi Guys,

I have a printer connected to a USB port on one of my computers and it appears to be going bad. It doesn't recognize the device when I plug it in or when I take it out.

Device Manager says that the USB devices are all working normally. When I print, I get an error that the document failed to print. Initially, it said that the printer was offline, but when I selected "work with it online" it said the status was "Ready", but I still got the same error.

I was able to hook the printer up to another computer via USB and print just fine. Can anyone figure this out? Shouldn't Device Manager tell me that it isn't working?

By the way, does anyone have experience with these wireless USB print server things? It is a real hassle to have the computer on when I want to print to this printer from one of the other computers on the network.

Do your mobo USB ports have problems with other devices as well?

Sounds like the mobo USB is flaking out. If so, why not disable it in BIOS and install a 3rd party USB card and connect to it?

As for a network printer, I have a sweet little Deskjet 6980 series that has built in wireless and wired networking. I choose to connect it to my router (wireless and wired) by short Cat 5 cable - about 6 feet away. It works perfectly for all of my computers on the network, wired and wireless.

Thanks Corkyg. I was thinking that a PCI card might be my cheapest option. My son mentioned that he thought something else seemed to be going bad too, but I can't remember what it was.

This printer (Canon MP730 multifunction) doesn't have built-in networking, but I thought that they have "add on" USB devices to do the same thing. ???
