USB goes out randomly

Yesterday my computer started acting weird. The USB interface would go out (lose power) anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes after each time I reboot my computer. Does this sound like a software or hardware problem?

My computer is a Shuttle SN85G4 with a A64 3000, 1 gig of memory, ati 9600 AIW. The reason I think it might be hardware related is that the computer runs EXTREMELY hot. Most days I can barely touch the case without having to pull my finger back. Nothing is overclocked though, I think the power supply might not be working correctly. Also when the surrounding environment gets too warm, the ethernet port goes in and out, and just recently my DVD burner stopped being able to read CDs. I'm thinking that all these issues are related to the heat. Any advice?

That is quite a common hardware problem, and usually can be traced to a lack of power at the USB ports. My solution to this is to use a self-powered USB hub and connect only it to the PC's port. Then there are no power demands imposed by devices on your computer.

Your other symptoms do suggest that a bigger power supply is probably needed in your system.

Heat can be either a cause or an effect. What is the ambient room temp?

The computer is hot all the time but the ambient room temp goes from 70 - 85.

I had it so that the only thing plugged into the USB port was a 4 port powered hub (at least I think its powered, its the hub that comes with the dell lcd's). And then on that hub I just had a mouse and a wireless nic plugged in.

Sounds like it could be a heat problem. Have you tried running with the side cover off? That might help you nail down the culprit - heat or PSU. Could also be a combo of both.

Update: The problem with the USB going out appears to be with the Zonet Zew2500p USB wireless nic. I unplugged that and the USB ports worked all day. Now I just need to find a better wireless nic solution.
