USB Gigabit Atheros

I just got an Asus netbook, 1005ha.

It comes with a 10/100 built-in NIC with an Atheros chipset. The cool thing about this is that it has a little utility that can measure the length of a cable connected to it. You just plug an ethernet cable into it, and push the button and it tells you the length of each of the wires.

It's pretty accurate. I have a 25 foot cable, and it said it was 8 meters, which is pretty close.

Since it's only 10/100, it only tells me the length of 4 of the wires, not 8.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any other NIC, that are gigabit, and USB, that can do the same thing.

This would be VERY useful in determining if a cable, or termination is bad, and which side, and pin is bad.

Thanks

Nope. I was more looking for something that could detect a break in one of the wires. And the TDR cable testers generally cost a few hundred dollars for the starting price. I was thinking if my onboard NIC has this functionality then there must a be a USB gigabit NIC that does the same thing.

The AMI bios on my ASUS M3A-H motherboard has a similar utility (also has an Attansic/Atheros chipset). Not sure how well it works though, haven't validated it. Also, check out dealextreme.com they may have a cheap(er) cable tester, but, I imagine you get what you pay for so do your research on it. Fortunately many of the items have reviews.
