USB floppy drive displayed when not plugged in

My friend has a Sharp notebook which uses an external USB floppy drive (and also an external USB CD-ROM drive). However, Windows ME shows an "A" drive even when the floppy drive is disconnected from the notebook. Double-clicking on the floppy makes the notebook hang. If I connect the floppy drive to the notebook it appears as a "D" drive which is double-clickable. Again double-clicking the "A" drive hangs the notebook.

Can anyone help me?

You might need to go into the bios at startup and take out references to floppy drives (startup seek, etc), or even disable the drive letter A. If that doesn't work, try right clicking on the my computer icon, select properties from the drop down menu, and then select the device manager tab. See if a non existent drive is showing up there and delete it.

I don?t have a computer with Win-Me on it at the moment, but I believe there is an option in there to scan for floppy drives at startup... I think it?s in the section where you set disk cache and swap space.

Escalade,
Done that - I had to uncheck the option to look for new floppy drives on start-up.

Richleader,
I did see an A drive in the bios but did not think to disable it. Will suggest to my friend to try that.
Thanks to all.
