USB Flash or Portable HDD with car stereo?

Hi everybody!

I installed my own car stereo a couple weeks ago. It was the first time I ever replaced a stock system, so I was happy I was able to do it. I bought a Kenwood KDC-X492. It has a USB 2 port on the front. You can connect an Ipod (and control it from the unit itself), any other kind of MP3 player, or a storage device that uses USB 2.

I don't have an MP3 player of any sort yet. I may in the future. For now, the only places I seem to listen to music are at my computer or in my car. Because of that, I was thinking that instead of investing in an MP3 player, I could get either a USB flash drive or a portable hard drive.

I'm sure a USB flash drive would work fine. It's small, very portable, and has a decent capacity. However, the price per gigabyte is significantly higher than a portable hard drive.

Do you think a portable hard drive would be okay to use in a car? I'm thinking of all the bumps in the road. Maybe there's some way to protect the drive from shock? Do you have any recommendations for a portable hard drive? The 500GB Western Digital "My Passport" looks okay. Plus, with that much space I could use it for more than just MP3s.

What about USB flash drives? I don't think they're as prone to bumps and shock. They're far more portable, but they're lacking in capacity compared to hard drives. If I went for this option, I'd want to get at least 8GB. Any recommendations?

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any advice or comments.

Get a 32GB USB flash drive from Microcenter for $80 and call it a day. You can fit ludicrous amounts of music on 32GB of space.

Thanks for the replies. I figured a portable hard drive would be a bad idea in a car, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm watching prices on 16GB and 32GB flash drives. Right now, 16GB seems to be a sweet spot considering pricing. I'm debating between the Corsair and Patriot (the black one) 16GB models.
