USB flash drive/pen drive question

Do those pen drives require proprietry software installed on the user computer, or does the drive show up as a drive without any installation of software. I want to buy one but am afraid it won't work at my school's computer lab if software installation is required.

Windows XP automatically recognizes the drive and assigns a drive letter to it. Win 98 & Win 2k has to have the drivers loaded. Hope this sheds a little light.

W2K will do it natively like WinXP does. I think even WinME does the same as the other two. Any earlier versions require drivers to be loaded.

I have one and done it on W2K and on my WinXP computer.

ME, win2k & xp will automatically detect the pendrive as a mass storage device & install drivers for it.
you'll need third party drivers for win98
