USB/Firewire external WD Hard Drive Write errors

Every few days I will leave my computer on to finish downloading some beta files or games from fileplanet and since I only have a 40GB Internal I turned to exteral and got a 120GB external WD hard Drive. Now ever so often I will get write errors say this and that were not properly coptied onto the hard drive. and have to start over since the file goes corrupt, lately I get tis message every few days but is this common to an external drive? It's plugged into a USB2 or USB 1 High speed.
