usb file transfer?

is there any way to do p2p usb file transfer with a plane jane usb cable? (i.e. not one of the $20 "pc connection" usb cables with the little circuit in the middle)

reason i'm wondering is..wouldn't it be faster over usb2 than through the lan?

thanks...and do you need any special software etc? or it'll just show up under network connections/network places and shares will show up? i just don't want to buy a cable if its gonna be too much of a hassle, since the network is already there...
