usb external hardrives power or motherboard issue

i have several external hardrives connected to usb ports plus a usb dongle and gamepads

now when there connected i have several issues like the computer not going past the bios screen or random crashes and just being slow in general (its very fickle though like right now have them all connected no problem and no issues)

there are 4 usb ports at the back plus two connected via connectors at the front (the front ones tend to have a lot of problems like some will not recognise the connection)

just wondering what could cause the issue i was thinking perhaps a motherboard problem or perhaps a power supply problem (using a 500 watt...phenom II quad core ,two internal hardrives and a nvidia 460 2gb)

Do the hard drives have external power? If not, it is probably draining too much from the USB ports.

HDDs should all be powered individually for best reliability and performance.
