...perplexed I am...a maxtor external HDD connected via USB to a machine running XP shows up under the device manager, and is enabled, but can't be found in 'my computer' and does not show up as an option to 'send to' when a file is right-clicked.

The drive is recognized by other computers, running both XP and Vista.

Can anyone shed any light on possible causes?

Have you checked the FAQ and other help on the Maxtor/Seagate site? What mobo is in the system that it doesn't work on? What size is the drive? More detail always helps in solving problems. AFAIK, no one here is psychic...

Oh, and this thread belongs in the Peripherals section.

This used to happen to me allot in XP. Easiest way to fix it for me was to connect it to another usb port. If that didn't work I had to right click on "My Computer" open "manage" than under the disk management part I had to assign it a letter. Not in windows right now so the directions might be a little off but it sounds like what I went through for years in windows.. Thank you Linux for freeing me.. :)
