USB DSL modems

Well I tried searching throught he forums, but since it seems that really doesn't turn up anything, and nothing caught my eye while looking at previous posts, I'll ask on a topic that for all I know has come up before.

My mom is getting DSL and the lady at Qwest asked her if she had a USB port. I assume this means she'll be getting some sort of DSL modem that hooks up to USB.

I had always thought that the standard was for the DSL provider to include a NIC, and my mom said that she thought the ad said something about a network card.

Do any of you have experience w/ USB DSL modems? Are they functional and speedy, or pieces of crap?

Thanks.

The USB DSL modems are modems that plug directly into the USB port. As far as I know there aren't any drivers for Linux, which is why I went with a cable modem. They have drivers for most versions of windows.

Don't know anything about the performance, as I sent my USB DSL modem back before even hooking it up.

With these modems, there is no need for a network card.

I wouldn't want a USB modem...AFAIK they take up more system resources, are harder to share, etc. Just call the ISP back, tell them you were mistaken and don't have an available USB port, and have them give you an ethernet modem.
