I am connecting to the IP using an USB DSL modem.

I would like to add a wireless router, can it be done.

What is the best component for an inexpensive but reliable setup?

What should I buy for each machine to complete the setup? Do I need an access point?

Machine 1: Main system with USB DSL modem

Machine 2: Cheapo system

Do I need wireless NIC for machine 1 if I have the router on machine 1?

Unfortunately (because of the USB Modem) a solid solution is relatively expensive!

The only Entry level router that supports USB DSL Modem is Vigor (about $125).

Draytek Vigor 2200 USB DSL Router.

To the Vigor you have to add a WAP (Wireless Access Point, about $125).

At this point you will have a DSL connection, with Router and Wireless capability.

Such a configuration can support 3 Wired (CAT5) computers, and many Wireless connections. Each Wireless computer has to be equipped with Wireless Client Card ($50-$100),

If I bought that USB router, what do I need to buy to complete the wireless network that could share the internet connection

As indicated above, you have to buy one Wireless Access point, and Wireless Client Card for each computer.

A Short primer:

Wireless LAN consists on two main components.

1. Access Point (A/P).

Access Point is the Main Transmitter/Receiver that mediate between your LAN, and main computer, to the rest of the Network. It is connected to the LAN's Hub/Switch. It usually supports an excess of 100 clients.

2 . Wireless Client Card.

Wireless Client Card is the LAN card that you should install on your network computers.

Most Client cards are PCMCIA, which work very well with Laptops. For Desktop, it is usually better to use USB Wireless Card. Most PCMCIA Wireless Cards with fixed antenna (stuck behind the PC) yield inferior results versus the Flexible Antenna on a USB card.

Conventional Wisdom* claims that the Orinoco Gold (About $90) is the best Wireless Client Card..
