USB driver problem with XP

Iam having a problem with the USB ports on my Toshiba A45-S121 laptop
w/XP Home . When I plug in a USB mouse ( or other device like a card reader ) , the device is the right name recognized but the generic XP drivers are not loaded and the drivers are not found ( fortunately the touchpad still works ) . The same thing happens with my printer even though the the drivers are loaded . This happend before a couple of years ago when it was under warranty and Toshiba support worked it out over over the phone (no OS re-load ) but I cannot recall the solution . I really would appreciate some help with this . -
Thanks

Maybe reinstalling the chipset drivers? If it is an Intel chipset, try going to the INtel site and seeing if any newer drivers are present. They should work anyway but no harm in checking out new chipset drivers.

No changes with chipset drivers .

The device is recogined with the little pop-up in the taskbar but in Device Manager ther is a question mark (?) .

I am thinking about going to Device Manager and uninstalling everything I see under Universal Seirial Bus Controllers . Will the XP on the machine set everything back up or will I loose something . All I have is that image disk came with the machine .

I was advised by friend to take a look at the "hidden" view in Device Manager . There is an exclamation mark by the word Serial under the long list under non-plug and plat drivers . Could this be the problem ? How to fix ?
