usb driver info in winxp device manager

so when i look at the usb section of the device manager of a new, clean winxp install it is chock full of stuff:

2 generic hubs
1 usb composite device
1 usb mass storage device
5 (!) usb root hubs
4 intel 82801EB usb universal controllers
and one lonely intel 82801 usb2 enhanced controller

note i have an abit is7 mobo which supposed has 8 usb2.0 ports. connected to it i have a dazzle card reader, supposedly 2.0, an iogear usb kvm switch (usb 1.1), a pocketpc pda cradle (not yet installed, usb v?), and an epson scanner (not yet installed but it's usb 2.0. connected to the kvm switch is a zboard keyboard (usb v?) with two integrated usb ports, a microsoft intellimouse (usb v?), and an intel web cam (also not yet installed).

now, clearly i've got a lot of stuff, but i'm still confused about all the items that show up under device manager, especially since only one shows up as usb2. since the mobo supports 8 usb 2.0 ports i assume all the controllers on the board are usb2.0 so why do i only show one? am i missing something here? your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

thanks,

joe

yeah, i'm not really worried but wondering if i'm actually getting usb2.0 support for the devices i have that can use it. given the access speeds i've observed AND given the device manager reporting i'm not convinced that i am.

I just put together a P4 system for my gf and had pretty much the same thing happen. Just install usb2.0 drivers for any USB devices that aren't "functioning properly" and you'll be set. I agree though, it's a mess.

hm, so are you saying i should try to install usb2 drivers for all of that stuff? if not does that mean that all if my usb2 ports are actually acting like usb1 ports? that would explain why all of my usb2 devices seem so slow ... !

does device manager show any yellow exclamation points or yellow question marks by any of the usb devices? if so, you need to reinstall the driver (just selet it from the list, either the intel usb2.0 driver or the ms generic usb2.0 driver).

no, their's no warnings or issues displayed - just a ton of different usb controls and only 1 of them is usb2.0. think i might try to reinstall the drivers for all of them and see what happens ...

try this. i notice when i plug a usb 2.0 device into a 1.0 port XP tells me that a high speed device is plugged into a lower speed port with a little baloon. so theoretically if it doesnt pop up then it should be running in 2.0. however, i have also had problems with usb drivers when you dont have sp1 installed that makes the usb2.0 unusable. when in this state i dont recall the baloon ever popping up regardless. i dont know if that helps at all... and i also realize that there is a flaw in the logic here, but my brain hurts at the moment.

hmm, interesting idea, only i don't actually have ANY usb1 ports ... which, since i don't get any "ballons" when i plug stuff in, proves that all my ports are running as usb2. however, i believe that windows actually remembers warnings it gave and won't warn again about this.

Not so, at least not IME. I use a subnotebook with USB 1.1 ports on it. It is running Windows XP SP2, and it warns me EVERY time I plug a USB 2 device into one of those ports.

ok, well, that's good to hear. i think i'll probably stop worrying about it. just wish someone could explain what the heck all those devices are for 8 stinking usb ports!
