i was wondering, i got a generic usb 2.0 drive taht has no ac adaptor or anyhting. but the other ones in stores come with one..... what the diffrence?

Hi, Non-Powered USB devices use +5 from the USB port. USB ports only supply .5 Amps. If you are running lots of USB plus the external drive you could be overtaxing the port. Printers on USB or any device that also have their own power draw very little from the USB Port. Hope this helps answer your question, Jim

Just to expand a little, 2.5" laptop drives use less power so some of them can be run just from the USB power. 3.5" desktop drives need more power so they need a power brick for the enclosure.

Is it a 2.5" or 3.5" enclosure?

I've seen a few 2.5" that don't have power, but I find that even you hook up a low-power laptop drive, it still doesn't get enough power from the USB to function.
