USB disconncet issue?

Just recently purchased the new 8GB Nano, hooray for me, and now the iPod which is connected via USB directly to the back of the computer randomly and suddenly disconnects from the PC as if it has been unplugged

This never once happened with my old 4GB Nano, but I did have a USB connection drop that occurred with a USB mouse on the back of the same computer.

Any ideas on what could be going on?

I can tell you that it's either the iPod or the motherboard causing the problems. Try your old, 4GB iPod, and if it doesn't happen, then there's something wrong with the new one.

Considering this NEVER happened with the 4GB, but something similar happened with the mouse, AND this doesn't happen at home ever I'll lean towards the motherboard of the work PC. I'll swap out the PC, just another IT admin perk, and see if that fixes the problem.

I doubt the setup in his sig is his work PC unless he brings it home at the end of the day, and has a load of identical ones to swap out like he said.

The 8 GB probably draws a bit more power - and USB is somewhat flaky in that vein. As soon as the load becomes marginal, they often just let go. A powered hub might help. How big is your power supply?

I haven't responded because I tried testing in a couple of flavors.

I swapped the box out, at work, and the problem materialized almost immediately. Connecting the Nano directly into the IBM NetVista PC via the Apple USB connector, and randomly the system just loses the USB connection.

On my home PC, in the sig, I have no such trouble and in fact have left the Nano in for the past 24 hours and it stayed connected.

I'll look to see if a Bios update is available. To reiterate this never happened at home or work with the 4GB Nano, but it was happening with a USB mouse at work. I finally got so fed up with plugging and unplugging the mouse that I switched to a PS2 mouse.

I had wondered if 8GB of memory was causing a power issue. Do you think a powered USB Hub would help because it would take the power responsibilties off of the Motherboard?

It solved a similar problem for me. I put powered USB hubs on all three systems, including my laptop, and since then, have had no USB drops.
